Arrested for DUI in La Mesa? Now What?
As a La Mesa DUI defense attorney, I understand the complexities of the law because I have represented hundreds of accused clients. Many of my clients have even come back to me for other cases or for an expungement in the future. When you come to me with your case, I will thoroughly read all reports, discuss what you believe happened when you were pulled over, and handle your case with caring, individual attention.
Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, even medication prescribed by your doctor, is a misdemeanor in California. These are usually viewed as less serious offenses with lower penalties, but individual circumstances may vary. In any event, if you are pulled over and arrested, it will still feel pretty serious.
If this is your first offense, you may face the following penalties:
- A year in San Diego County jail
- Probation for up to 5 years
- Assessments and fines of $1,600 to $2,300
- A mandatory DUI program for up to 9 months
- License suspension for 6 months to a year
- Installation of an Ignition Interlock Device in your vehicle for up to 3 years
- Penalties and higher insurance rates
- Additional penalties for "aggravating factors" such as higher BAC, causing an accident, reckless driving, having a minor in the car with you, and more
In addition, if this is your second or subsequent offense, there may be harsher punishments.
Anyone who has been through the justice system can tell you that any punishment for DUI convictions are not fun. Even a first offense or conviction can have serious personal, financial, and professional repercussions.
